Just my $0.02 worth on this: I believe that the antioxidants in fruits
are the main contribution to cancer prevention.  Another way to get a
good supply of antioxidants is from green tea or other brewed or chewed
plants.  I would not be surprised to learn the hunter-gatherer
communities you mentioned above drink teas or chew on green plants to
get the same benefits.
