Kathy,

I cope through trying to get enough exercise, rest, and eating properly.
As far as coping psychologically, I stay active at work and at church,
and generally try to stay in contact with people as much as possible.
If I "crawl in a hole" for awhile, I get pretty far down, so when I
start to do that, I consciously try to force myself to get out more. It
helps a lot that my wife describes herself as a "social butterfly." She
won't let me get too isolated.

I've also gotten counseling on a couple of occasions when things seemed
really bleak. My dad got me started the first time, and said that it's
nothing to be ashamed of. He's a (now retired) surgeon, and said "If
you had appendicitis, you'd get it treated, right?" He helped me to
realize that getting help for things like depression is the same thing
as getting treated for any other health problem.

It may be a bit more difficult for you to physically get around as you
get older, but that's OK. If you end up needing new or different
assistive technology, or to take a little more time to do things than
when you were younger, that's OK, too. It happens to all of us, just a
little sooner for some than others.

Kendall
