I applaud Valerie for her three part summary on CD and schizophrenia.
Since not all celiacs go on to develop schizophrenia, I think we have to
look at this as a subset, where we have an overlapping disorder in
addition to celiac disease.
I can propose 2 scenarios, with the thought that both scenarios could
co-exist to the detriment of person who might be afflicted.
First scenario is Vitamin D deficiency/ thyroid disease.
We celiacs know that thyroid disease is not uncommon among us.
You can google Vitamin D and schizophrenia and get some good
hits...apparently there are rumblings that the RDA of 400 IUs just isn't
enough, especially in the winter. We certainly can understand that,
since Vitamin D is essential to the health of the gut. According to one
site that I was on, 12% of the population could be deficient in Vitamin
D. D is made on the skin, but the gut is where Vitamin A is absorbed.
Perhaps it is that interaction that is the weakest link for us. That's
pretty broad, but more specifically, it might be narrowed down to a
particular gene that seems to be defective in both cases of
schizophrenia and autism, and codes for low density lipoproteins.
