Position Profile

Executive Director

Services for the Visually Impaired

Silver Spring, Maryland

Services for the Visually Impaired, based in Silver Spring, Maryland, is
seeking an

entrepreneurial executive director to build on our exceptional 32-year
record as an innovator

and leader in providing services to visually impaired individuals in the
greater Washington, DC

region.

The Organization

Services for the Visually Impaired (SVI) was incorporated in 1973 as
Volunteers for the

Visually Handicapped. In 2000 the name was changed to Services for the
Visually Impaired

(SVI) to reflect the agency's mission and goals. Last year SVI provided a
variety of volunteer

and professional services to approximately 700 visually impaired adults.
Programs include

. The White Cane Center, which provides canes and an array of talking,
Braille, and

large-print products at reasonable prices.

. Volunteers who help visually impaired individuals with their personal
business such as

reading mail, paying bills and shopping.

. Orientation and Mobility Training provided by certified orientation and
mobility specialists

who help visually impaired people, particularly the newly blind, learn to
move about freely in

their homes, communities, and places of employment.

. Independent Living Skills Training that enables individuals safely to
manage their own

personal care and household arrangements.

. Computer Training that helps visually impaired people learn specialized
software

applications, screen readers, screen magnification, and closed-circuit
television.

. Braille Transcription of client-provided materials, such as conference
handouts, restaurant

menus, and brochures.

SVI is governed by a 13-member board of directors. The organization's annual
budget is

about $400,000. Current staffing includes seven full and part-time
positions. More

information on the SVI may be found at:

www.servicesvi.org

The Position

Reporting to the board of directors, the executive director will provide
leadership to the

organization and manage its day-to-day affairs. Key responsibilities
include:

. Direct and coordinate activities to achieve SVI's mission.

. Manage the organization's programmatic, financial and administrative
functions.

. Work with the board to establish the organization's direction and
long-range plan.

. Establish and execute the organization's fund development plan.

. Staff the board of director's activities.

Leadership Opportunity

In recent years SVI has expanded services without commensurate attention to
increasing the

organization's revenues. While the organization has a substantial financial
reserve, the

challenge for the next executive will be to increase the financial resources
to support and

expand the current portfolio of services. Once the financial foundation has
been laid, the

board envisions long-term growth opportunities including an expansion of
services

geographically.

The board will be looking to the new executive to shift the culture of the
organization to be in

line with its ambition to grow the organization. The incoming executive
will be expected to

imbue the staff team with a shared focus and a spirit of entrepreneurism,
and to develop

proactive approaches to generating visibility for SVI and marketing services
in the broader

community.

For the near-term (next 12-18 months) our priorities include:

. Continue our excellent work providing services.

. Create more visibility for SVI.

. Dramatically expand the organization's financial base through expanding
the donor base and

earned income.

. Build on and expand the organization's current competencies.

Experience and Attributes

Ideal candidates for this position will share our commitment to providing
excellent services

and will bring a variety of experiences and attributes to SVI, including:

. a proven track record of leadership and management with at least five
years of senior

management experience.

. the ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse populations
and to foster

collaboration among diverse groups.

. good business judgment and high degree of financial literacy.

. an entrepreneurial focus and experience with program development, program
packaging,

marketing, and evaluation, ideally with experience in developing earned
income.

. a successful track record in growing an organization's resource base
through individual

donors, major gifts and planned gifts.

. a record of success in building and managing sound relationships with
board members,

volunteers and community partners.

. experience with vision loss/blindness, disabilities, or rehabilitation
services is highly desired,

ideally in community-based organizations.

. a high degree of openness to and savvy about the opportunities of new
technology.

. a bachelor's degree (advanced degree preferred).

Salary will be competitive and commensurate with preparation and experience.
