http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/homicide/hmrt.htm

The homicide rate doubled from the mid 1960's to the late 1970's. In 1980,
it peaked at 10.2 per 100,000 population and subsequently fell off to 7.9
per 100,000 in 1985. It rose again in the late 1980's and early 1990's to
another peak in 1991 of 9.8 per 100,000. Since then, the rate has declined
sharply, reaching 5.5 per 100,000 by 2000.

Homicide 554 1.8 (Rates are calculated on the basis of 100,000
population.) For 2001 (rate stable for 2 previous years).

StatsCanada has ours at 1.8 per 100,000, and the US Dept. of Justice has
theirs at 5.5 (for the year 2000). The 5.45 to 8.40 ratio did not look right
to me...
