Hi.

You also might want to check to see that you have the very latest
drivers.  Is there a port replicator available for your laptop that gives
you real serial ports?  That may be a more reliable way to go than the
adaptor if such a thing exists for your computer.  Those are the only
things I can think of off the top of my head.
