Bob, you need to go somewhere other than rat shack for your radio info <g>.  You
ought to be able to do well on hf if you're going for a general or above and
with the right antenna outdoors you should do ok on uhf/vhf.  A long wire or
loop or just about anything for 80 or 160m or even just a long wire not cut to
length out there ought to help your am band a great deal.  For a variety of
reasons today radios can receive signals far better than was the case 30 years
ago.
