When I was living on the tiny feudal island I used to go through a hole in
a hedge to the farm next door early every morning. I'd carry a big
enamelled jug which I could dip into a large tub of creamy milk still warm
from the cows. I confess to skimming off more cream than I should have ;-)

I'll never forget the taste. It had a sweet, rich flavour that is lost in
processed milks. I didn't seem to have a dairy intolerance in those days.

My larger home-island has one dairy, which has a monopoly. It's impossible
to buy any other kind of milk here. They recently started to sell organic
milk, but it's processed just like the other kind.

I'll see if I can find a farmer who is willing to sell me a little raw
milk. As for fermented cream, it sounds interesting but I haven't heard of
it. Is it anything like sour cream?

I react badly to yoghurt, live or not. My reactions to dairy products are
very similar to a bad case of hay fever, and bring on mild asthma too,
which otherwise I only ever suffer from if I get a URT infection.

I've always assumed that I'm either allergic or intolerant to casein, and
that it's found in varying quantities all dairy products, processed,
fermented or not.

I'm wondering if people who are intolerant to dairy products are reacting
to different things, lactose only being the most common culprit. I'm going
to do more research on this, but if anyone could send me any links I could
follow, I'd be grateful. I'm most interested in why some people can
tolerate certain dairy products and not others.

At the moment I'm still keeping solely to meats, fish, shellfish, veg (no
potatoes, beans or pulses) fruit, nuts and a few seeds. I'll never return
to grains again, but I'm no extremist, and if I find that I can eventually
tolerate some kind of dairy, it would be my preferred occasional treat <g>

And by the way, my 13-year-old daughter has been eating paleo by choice
for over a week now. She loves it and says she sleeps more soundly and
feels more energetic during the day. As a result, she's spent much effort
at devising a new weight-training routine for us, spread out over each day
in small doses.
