Jali Yankuba Saho Passes Away

  A celebrated Gambian kora player, Jali Yankuba Saho, passed away peacefully at Serrekunda Health Centre last Tuesday night.
  Jali Yankuba was born in 1946 in Niamina Dankunku following his father’s migration there from Niani Kayai.
  According to late Saho’s brother, Jali Yankuba entered the entertainment scene in 1964 and since then has carved an enviable position for himself in the world of entertainment.
  “Yankuba had all the opportunities and enjoyment that one can generate from culture and music. He helped promote culture and religion in the society and was always ready to work for his nation. He had taken The Gambia’s name to the wider world especially to the United States of America which he toured extensively in 1977 in the company of renowned Gambian artists of the likes of master xylophonist, Fabala Kanute, hallam maestro, Abdoulie Samba, accompanying koraist, Manjago Suso, and lead lady vocalist, Norse Kanute, in the context of a promotional multi-disciplinary government contingent.
  Saho, who reportedly died of throat complications connected with a car accident in 1998, was supposed to undergo overseas treatment in Germany next Monday on president Jammeh’s promise.
  Secy Susan Waffa-Ogoo was among a multitude of sympathisers that went to offer condolences to the deceased’s family.
  It would be recalled that Jali Yankuba Saho released his last album Jamano in 1995. He is survived by three wives and thirteen children.
  His funeral was attended by several hundreds of mourners including government officials and people from different walks of life.
