Death

October 8, 2005
At least two patients died of cholera at Gambia's main referral hospital,
the Royal Victoria Hospital this week, The ALLGAMBIAN online Newspaper has
been reliably informed.
One of the deaths was a male Gambian, while the other was said to be a
Mauritanian National. Health Ministry sources say they have received about
20 suspected cases of cholera and patients hit by the deadly disease were
being given the necessary medications.
According to our sources, the government is trying to down play the
cholera outbreak, in view of the October tourist season, as many European
tourists "have already booked their flights and hotel reservations."
Health Ministry officials confirmed that "there is indeed a good number of
cholera cases reported in government health facilities and two patients
have already been confirmed death."
It would be recalled that Cholera was last discovered in The Gambia in
1998, which left some Brikama youths dead and some others seriously
affected. The youths who survived the deadly disease say they were
infected with the virus, while they were in the Southern province of
Casamance, where they traveled to attend a football match.
Health experts say cholera is normally transmitted through contaminated
food and water. Patients affected by the disease usually experienced
diarrhea, dehydration and persistent vomiting. The virus that causes the
epidemic is usually called "vitro cholera".
