In the "Personal Journal" section of today's Wall Street Journal, Page D4,
is an article entitled, "Choices Grow for Wheat-Free Diets" in the Health
section.
It's a good article on the rising demand for gluten free foods in the
U.S. To quote one statement from the article, "Supermarket sales of
gluten-free products jumped 18% in the 52 week period ended in June..."
In another statement saying that annual sales just from health food
markets totaled over $600 million. Also mentioned in the article was the
fact that the FDA will have to come up with a rule defining "gluten-free"
by 2008.
Because of the demand for gluten-free foods, it is filling a niche vacated
by fad diets and food crazes on supermarket shelves. It's a win-win for
both celiacs and supermarkets.
