Great Summary! Faye was seeking an alternative to anti-acid medications for
relief of heartburn. Baking soda, TUMS and most papaya enzyme tablets are
anti-acids that will neutralize stomach acid & thus interfere with
digestion.
I got a chuckle out of the fascinating information about bananas. There's
actually nothing that gives me a worse case of heartburn quicker than a
banana! ha ha! Shows to go ya, that EVERY BODY is different!
Peppermint oil is not recommended for heartburn because peppermint is known
to relax smooth muscle. The LES (low esophageal sphincter) is a smooth
muscle, so peppermint can actually increase reflux. Chocolate does that
too. So how ironic it is that chocolate mints are frequently served after
dinner! However peppermint can be good for relaxing the small intestines &
colon in IBS which can help with diarrhea and the release of excess gas.
