I've found an easy way of subscribing to the groups.
Simply, send a blank email with the name of the group followed by a dahs and then the rest [log in to unmask]
or example,
[log in to unmask]

I should have remembered this easy trick.
Oh well, it still would have been nice if Yahoo had actually returned my email.

To join or leave the list, send a message to
[log in to unmask]  In the body of the message, simply type
"subscribe vicug-l" or "unsubscribe vicug-l" without the quotations.
