APRC expels Lai Conteh Written by Ebrima Jaw Manneh Friday, 25 November 2005 Abdoulie Conteh, the embattled mayor of the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC), was yesterday expelled from the ruling APRC party with immediate effect, according to a press release issued by the Office of the President.
According to the press release, Conteh was expelled from the party for five reasons, namely corruption, arrogance, dereliction of duties, divisive activities, and contempt for superior authority.
On the corruption charge, the release states: “Two Commissions of Enquiry into corruption among Public Officers have found him wanting - (1) Commission into the Auditor General’s report - (2) The Paul Commission as well as audit exercises carried out at the KMC.”
Concerning the second reason for his expulsion, the release states: “His extraordinary arrogance towards not only the public but to Constituted Authority is unacceptable in the APRC.”
Then the release gives details of his lacklustre attitude towards his duties as mayor. “His lack of commitment to his duties as Mayor of KMC has led to the drastic deterioration of sanitary conditions within the KMC. This poses a serious threat to the health of the inhabitants of KMC in particular and Gambians in general and despite numerous warnings by the APRC leadership to clean up KMC expecially Serekunda, Bakau, Talinding, Bundung, just to name a few, the situation remains the same. KMC used to be one of the cleanest municipalities in the country. Today it is one of the filthiest. This cannot be condoned,” the release states.
Furthermore, the release charges that his activities do more harm than good to the party. “He is a divisive element in the APRC and his activities are as unacceptable as they are detrimental to the existence of the APRC...”
Finally, the release contends that Conteh bit the finger that had fed him. “His arrogance and nonchalant attitude coupled with his contempt towards superior authority is unacceptable as this is a clear manifestation of deep noted ingratitude. Can anyone imagine that Mayor Abdoulie Conteh walked out on the Vice President?” the release asks.
In the release, the ruling party warns its militants and supporters that Conteh’s expulsion is final and no appeals on his behalf would be entertained.
Then it added that the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) “is hereby duly informed that Conteh no longer represents the APRC as the Mayor of the KMC.”
“It should be made very clear that no activity geared towards re-admitting Lai Conteh into the APRC would be tolerated as even the birds know how filthy KMC has become due to neglect and blatant dereliction of duty on the part of Mayor Abdoulie Conteh. Therefore, any such appeals would be deemed to have been done in bad faith and against national interest. The burning of the Serekunda Market is a consequence of such irresponsible and care-free attitude on the part of a Mayor who is elected on the APRC ticket,” the release stresses.
