RAHMADHAN JOKES
BY YERO JALLOW

October 14, 2005
It is rahmadhan, and people of Sareh Mawdeh started fasting. The people of
Sareh Mawdeh are known for their "phesal"-being very forgetful, nervous,
worried and overreacting during rahmadhan. It seems that over the years
this has attracted attention in the surrounding to the extend that natives
of this town will even pretend to be outsiders during rahmadhan in order
to capture the gossips people make about them.
This year is a little better in the Town, so let's look at what is
observed so far.
1. The sighting of the crescent is really funny in the village. I wonder
how many new moons they see? In a town of one thousand people, the moon is
seen three times. This results to them teasing each other with it, and you
will often hear them say "We got it this year." This is observed during
rahmadhan starting and ending. Three new moons on a single month in one
village !(laughter !)
2. The beginning day of fasting is thought to be the toughest since it is
like a sudden change to the body system. That's where the Alkaloo did the
famous drama on a broad day light. After his early morning meal, the
Alkaloo went to sleep. He woke up around noon, when the sun is straight
overhead. He went back to bed again with a groaning stomach. He was not
comfortable on bed. He got trapped in between the bed and outside looking
at the sun. All he wanted to see was sunset. To him, the sun was
stationary. It won't move no matter how many times he comes outside to
look at it. He took his kartuse (gun) and started firing at the sun.
Villagers had come from far and near rescuing the sun and their head.
Shooting the sun for sunset to come! (laughter !)
3. The case with Karamobaa, the village imam is not as serious as the
village head. The Village imam on this single morning was late for early
morning shuhur (breakfast), and by the time that he was up from bed, the
sun rays were greeting him on his bed. He called out to the first wife and
said "Mariama, pull the door and window curtains so that i can have
darkness in the room, and eat my meal." Karamobaa's followers were
awaiting in the mosque and they heard his utterance. Imam taking shuhur
after sunrise !(Laughter !)
NOTE: Developed from traditional story telling. If you are not familiar
with the Gambian culture, you might not be able to understand the
funniness in it. All the same, the moral lesson intended is about emphasis
on rahmahdhan. How about take a break and a deep laughter ...hahahaaa.
