Jammeh Attends World Summit

The Gambian President, Yahya Jammeh will join world leaders in New York to
attend the World Summit to review the implementation of Millennium
Development Declaration.

According to a press communiqué, the two-day summit opens on September 14th
and closes on 16th. Jammeh is expected to actively participate in the summit
that wants to shape ways to eradicate poverty, a move directly linked with
natural resource management in developing countries like The Gambia.


The summit also takes stock of how countries fare towards attaining the
goals of the 2015 Millennium Development Goals. The Millennium Development
Goals covers poverty eradication, efficient supply of drinking water,
empowerment of women and spread of infectious diseases.

One of the interim reports of the UN millennium project requested by the
Secretary General to inform the September review, states "a considerable
body of scientific data points to environmental degradation the erosion of
genetic diversity, the loss of the species, degrading of decoys stems, and
decline of ecosystem services-as a direct cause of many of the most pressing
issue we face today including poverty, declining human health, hunger,
undrinkable water, emerging disease, rural-urban migration and civil
stride."

The release further stated that over recent months, the environment has
emerged as a crucial pillar, if not a corner stone, upon which the goals or
fall may well stand or fall. The 2005 world summit also aims to deliver a
new and strengthen United Nations from the areas of security to human
rights. Heads of state and governments are expected to attend the summit.
