My family stopped in Williamsburg for a day last summer. I had tried to
contact someone about the restaurants in the historic area ahead of time,
but for some reason I was not tracked to the right people and ran out of
time before starting the trip. I was in line the morning we were to begin
sight seeing and met a young woman who said she had celiac and told me she
had no trouble eating at any of the historic area taverns and restaurants.
So, my husband, three young children and I decided to try. We went to
Shield's tavern. We got in line to be the first at opening and even spoke
briefly to one of the hosts just prior to opening. We explained what we
needed to the waiter, who went into to the kitchen and found out exactly
what on the menu we could eat(he didn't stand there guessing that such and
such was ok, he verified). It was a great meal. My kids got to enjoy being
served by the people in costume and no one had gluten by accident (we all
eat gluten free). I believe one of the obvious keys to our good meal was
getting to the restaurant in time to be the first seated. The other key was
the attentiveness of the waiter. Having been to Williamsburg many times
prior to diagnosis, I believe the waiter's behavior was typical and anyone
could expect that kind of attentiveness.
