Here is a possible suggestion. Check to see if your CMOS settings for power
management have been changed. It sounds to me like your installation of XP
is set for an ACPI (software shutdown of the computer), but the CMOS is now
set for no ACPI support. This would give you the failure mode you are
experiencing. This is not necessarily the cause, but could be worth
checking.
