Brad,
Just remember that giving the husband children was the primary reason for
being of a woman in Rachel's day.  Remember Hannah?  Her husband tried to
tell her that it didn't matter that she had no children, but Hannah
wasn't buying it.  Rachel was saying that if she couldn't give Jacob any
children she was no better to him than if she were dead and he wouldn't
miss much if she were.  I don't see this as selfishness, but a desperate
attempt to give her man the one thing that  mattered.
