Look into BartPE, (Bart's Preinstalled Environment),
bootable live windows CD/DVD http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/
or XPPE, (Svenska's XpPe Boot CD ) http://www.xppe.com/
(BartPE is a lot simpler for a beginner.)
Make a boot disk from one of the above, with Chkdsk enabled in "setup".
You will need the files from your Windows XP(+) Installation CD-Rom.
(It must be slip streamed with Service Pack 1 or higher)
Run chkdsk from the boot CD. Sometimes that will find things, (and
fix them), that Windows just can't find when left running "on its own".
