I got the following from the ASUS site about your board:

DDR 400
3 x 184-pin DIMM Sockets
Max. 3 GB unbuffered PC3200/PC2700/PC2100/PC1600 non-ECC DDR RAM Memory

What this tells me is that all 3 slots are identical.  Their placement was
probably a factor of the board architecture more so than having a
"preferred" slot.  I imagine you can use any of them.  Personally, I would
use one of the slots on the outside for a single chip and not the middle
slot.  Why?  No particular reason...just a habit I've gotten in to.
Using the slot closest to the CPU should work fine, assuming your memory
chip is compatible with the specs listed.
