To everyone on the list who responded to my post last evening: Thank you
all very much! I have personally avoided malt flavoring all these years but
wanted to verify before responding to my mother. I also called Kelloggs
this morning and they were extremely helpful and aware of the issues
involved. So Mom will not be eating Rice Krispies for breakfast!

Just to fill you all in because of your kind concern: I called my father
and told him where I buy my products when I am in their area, and suggested
he zip on over and buy a box of Nutty Rice and a loaf of Rice Almond bread
and bring them to the hospital. If the dieticians won't do their job
properly we will have to do it for them. My mother also convinced the head
dietician to call me (I should hear from her this afternoon). I will supply
her with some WWW sites she should take a look at, info about the "Gluten
Free Gourmet", and some relevant phone numbers.

As per long term management for my mother, she lives in the Napa Valley, CA,
so I doubt there is a local celiac group. She and Dad are both coping with
coronary artery disease so if it requires much effort to communicate with a
group she won't be up to doing it. Hopefully, I will be able to supply her
with most of the guidance she needs. Right now the doctors are
concentrating on putting weight on her and will do it however they have to.
Once they have her nutrition where they want it they will want to place her
on a heart healthy diet. I use Betty Hagman's "Gluten Free Gourmet" but
modify the recipes to cut down on the fat (since both parents have heart
disease I feel prevention is the best cure for me). Does anyone else have
any good heart healthy, GF ideas?

Thanks again, y'all are a fantastic safety net!
