I really did it cold turkey (no pun intended :) ) except that I ate an
orange or some nuts during the day at first. The stomach thing stopped
after about 3 or 4 weeks so that doesn't happen anymore although it did
for awhile. It was hard for about 7 - 10 days but then it became much
easier. The mental clarity started almost immediately, so I got a
tangible reward right at the start.

The key for me is to break the fast with protein. I have leftover meat
or sardines or chicken that I start with at night, before I actually eat
a regular dinner. Then it is smooth sailing. If I get into junk first, I
stay in junk. Since my house has  alot of junk, this occasionally
happens although not too often.
