Bonnie,

Preservation is populated by more people who are more fun to be with
than the alternatives. There's an easy self-effacing confidence in
this little niche. There's a good deal more respect between amateur
and professional than might be found in other niches. And there is a a
vast array of hyphenated-professionals. There would be no joking about
your profession if we were not accepting the possibility that there
might be a contribution of value made by a "Preservation-Therapist".
Why not? We have preservation-architects, preservation-engineers,
preservation-carpenters, preservation-beaurocrats, preservation-masons,
and so on. I once went looking for a preservation-accountant. I
failed at the time. I concluded that I'd have to find an accountant
and make him/her a preservationist...alas, it was not to be.

(Besides, some of these folks are real head cases and need all the help
we can give them.)
