I don't know what he had in mind when he said "orderly"
in the subject line, but I don't bother with the software that
comes with a UPS since, if I am not at least near a PC, it
is already shut down. (The ultimate security precaution...)
If the start/stop cycles kill it, I'll just build a newer one... <grin>
One way to handle open programs with things to save is to
set the "hidden values" to time out...
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"HungAppTimeout"="5000"
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"WaitToKillAppTimeout"="20000"
and then force the program closed (on shutdown...)
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"AutoEndTasks"="1"
You loose data, but that is a little better than having the
system just "blink off"...
