Hi everyone,
I have been using AVG Free Edition for sometime successfully with
Windows-98, with both WindowEyes and Jaws. About two weeks ago it suddenly
would not allow me to update; it gives me the following useless message:
----------------------------------------
Update AVG
----------------------------------------
The request timed out and could not be completed. The update server
connection was interrupted.
Please follow these steps: <!3> • <!x>Make sure your Internet connection
is active (in your browser please try to open the
<a=http://www.grisoft.com>www.grisoft.com</a> website). <!3> • <!x>Try to
run the update later or schedule an automatic update for another time. <!3>
• <!x>Make sure the connection parameters are set properly. To open the
configuration
<?x>dialog go to the AVG Control Center / Update Manager component /
<?x>Configuration button. <!3> • <!x>If the problem persists, please
refer to the <a=http://free.grisoft.com/redir/faqupdate>FAQ section</a> of

<?x>an answer to your question.

I have attempted to go to the website as directed in this message for help
without obtaining any useful solution. One suggestion was to make sure
your firewall allows the updates to run, but I haven't been able to figure
out how to do that with Norton Personal Firewall as of yet. There is no
direct help from AVG for their free edition.
I also did a re-install of the AVG three times; the install is successful
and the test options run, but no improvement in the problem with the
"internal virus checker is out of date", even though the newer version of
AVG claims to have been successfully installed and functional.
Is there some setting on the computer that could have mysteriously changed
itself that I should try to find to reset?
I'd give up on the whole thing, except I don't know of any better virus
checker that works, having tried others.
Thanks for any help you all might have to offer. It will be much appreciated.
Jan Santos.
