Australian and New Zealand sheep are fed grass on open pasture most of
their lives. The pasture may be supplemented with molasses licks when
there is little pasture left; the molasses provides basic nutrition, so
they can make do to low grade feed (leaves, twigs, straw etc.) without
disadvantage. Later in a drought the sheep will be fed hay and may be
supplemented with grain – paddocks can be barren in a drought. Other
sheep here are fed grain as a matter of course over the weeks prior to
slaughter. On our restaurant menus “grain fed” is regarded as a mark of
superiority for both beef and lamb.
