Hi Laruence,
 Try this. If you have a volume control in your tray right click it and open
all the controls. Check to see if the digital volume is muted.
 I had this problem with 98SE and my sound blaster sound card every time I
did a restart.
If you do not have the control in the tray go to the control panel and open
sounds and then controls and look for the same thing.
