Alison A. Hillman, One of Three Recipients of the 2003 Paul G. Hearne/AAPD
Leadership Award to be featured on "Disability Matters" with
Joyce Bender

PITTSBURGH, PA- Alison A. Hillman, one of three recipients of the 2003
Paul G. Hearne/AAPD Leadership Award will be featured with Joyce Bender
on "Disability Matters" on Tuesday, April 27, 2004 from 2 to 3 PM
eastern time. The Milbank Foundation for Rehabilitation established The
Paul G. Hearne Leadership Awards program in 1999 to recognize and carry
on the work of Paul G. Hearne, American Association of People with
Disabilities' (AAPD) founder and a renowned leader in the national
disability community, as well as to realize his goal of cultivating
emerging leaders to carry on the disability movement.

Hillman is the Director of MDRI's Americas Advocacy Initiative. An
attorney with an international human rights background, Hillman designs
and implements MDRI's advocacy support programs, human rights
monitoring, and litigation in the Americas.

Before joining MDRI through a New Voices fellowship in September 2002,
Hillman lived and worked in Latin America on and off for the previous 11
years. Through her work at the International Human Rights Clinic at
American University (2000-2001), she represented petitioners before the
Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. In 2000, Hillman received
the National Association for Public Interest Law's Exemplary Public
Service Award by a Summer Fellow for her work in Petén, Guatemala.
Hillman received her law degree cum laude from American University,
Washington College of Law in 2002, and her bachelor's degree with
distinction from Cornell University in 1992.

The host of Disability Matters, Joyce A. Bender, is President and CEO of
Bender Consulting Services, Inc. (BCS) and its "sister company" Bender
Consulting Services of Canada, Inc. (BCSC). BCS provides competitive
employment opportunities for Americans with disabilities in the areas of
information technology, engineering, finance/accounting, human resources
and general business. In 1985, Joyce had a life-threatening accident
due to epilepsy, which caused an intracranial hemorrhage that required
subsequent brain surgery. Against all odds, Joyce recovered from this
accident that left her with a 60 percent hearing loss in one ear and a
realization that she had epilepsy. As a result of her personal
experience, she developed a passion for helping people with disabilities
and founded both companies. BCS does business nationally within the
United States, while BCSC works in both Ontario and Quebec.
