My goal is to NOT have to install HP's Recovery CD Set and all of it's crapware. I want to install a clean copy of WinXP on my HP machine. Windows can't find drivers for the sound card or the SM Bus Controller. HP says I have to reload their "Recovery" (and all their crapware and ad-serving software) to get the SM Bus Controller driver. They admitted that they SOLD SPACE ON MY HARD DRIVE to advertisers "to keep their costs down."
This is the information I have gathered so far, but I don't know what to do with it.
I would appreciate any help or guidance. Thanks, AnnaSummers
The problem I'm having is that there are four (or more) 845G "family" chipsets.
The drivers are specific for ONE of these, but Everest and several similar utilities only identify my motherboard/chipset as 845G/GL/GV/etc. - that is one of the FAMILY, which is not specific enough identification. I have tried to get support from Intel, but before you can get a message to them, they want the very information that I'm needing their help to find.
When I downloaded a sound driver (suggested by HP) that failed to make the soundcard work, it moved the sound device from questionmarked "Other Devices" to the sound/game device area (in Device Manager) and it said "Imperial TriGem" something like that in Device Manager.
I downloaded and ran Everest
Everest said:
Motherboard ID is 31861.HPD.0000.D.0205151908
Motherboard Name is unknown
Chipset is Intel (I don't know if below is a CHOICE or has BOTH)
Northbridge Intel Brookdale-1845GL
Southbridge: Intel 82801DB(M) ICH4
Under PCI Devices:
Intel 8280 1DB(M) ICH4(-M) - SMBus Controller [A-1]
I also ran another equipment ID utility that said:
Motherboard
Intel NBGV - Northwood/Brookdale-G Validation Board
No version, no serial
Chipset Intel 845G/GL/GV Brookdale Host-Hub Interface Bridge (A1-step)
Under PCI Devices
Bus Master IDE Controller - Intel Trigem Computer Inc
Under SM Bus Controller
Device ID: PCI\VEN_8086^/dev.etc.
Description: Intel® 8280 1DB/DBM SMBus Controller 24C3
Driver: [4D36E97D-E325-11CD-BFC1-08002BE10318]\0046
And another equipment ID utility that said:
Chipset: Intel 845G chipset FAMILY
Memory Controller: 82845G/GE/GL/GV
I/O Controller: 8280 1DB (ICH4)
Integrated Graphics: 82845G Graphics Controller
Actual Drivers 5.1.2600.0 mostly
Apparently, I also need to download the "Chipset Software Installation Utility"
"Problems with the SMBus controller typically indicate that you didn't install the Intel INF update utility, also known as the Chipset Software Installation Utility. This is easliy fixed by installing the latest one from here:" http://tinyurl.com/9flpe
Problem is there are a bunch of them at that site - all for Windows XP:
INF Update Utility 7.0.0.1025 INFINST_AUTOL.EXE (2005)
doesn't seem to include 845G (release notes)
INF Update Utility 6.3.0.1007 INFNST.EXE (2004)
doesn't seem to include 845G (release notes)
INF Update Utility 6.2.1.1001 INFINST.EXE (2004)
includes 845G, 845GE, 845GL, 845GV (release notes)
INF Update Utility 6.0.1.1002 INFINST.EXE (2004)
also includes 845G, 845GE, 845GL, 845GV (release notes)
Software Archives
INF Update Utility 3.20.1008 INFINST_ENU.EXE (2002)
includes "845 chipset" (release notes)
I bought computer between April & June of 2002
I don't know which to use to install which drivers, except that all but the "archive" install utility had not yet been created when I bought the computer - so maybe the oldest one is the one I should use. But which drivers to use? And are the drivers of the same generation as the older installer? If I'm using newer drivers, do I need to use a newer installer? Also, HOW to use them - the readme file for INFINST_ENU.EXE (2002) is very confusing; I just don't understand it.
It should not be this hard to install drivers for my hardware. HP should have provided a CD for this purpose with the machine.

Imperial-G: 533/400Mhz
Imperial-GV: 533/400Mhz
Imperial-GL: 400Mhz only
Imperial-GLV: 400Mhz only
"Intel officially states the 845GL supports a 100MHz/400MHz QDR FSB it will support 133MHz/533MHz. ???does this make sense???
"The 845GL is a lite version of the 845G.
"The only differences in the 845G and 845GL is
1: 845G officially supports 133MHz/533MHz
2: 845G supports HT (only later B-1 and later stepping models)
3: 845G supports AGP slot. "
I think I have G or GL (from the ID utilities that I ran) but I don't know which one.
Also, someone sent me this.

"found in a post........ using Google
"The Trigem board uses Intel chipset per below......
"845GL is the number on this one but you need a positive ID of your set to get those drivers from Intel.
"HP Imperial CPU Upgrade

"I have a HP Pavilion with the Trigem Imperial GLVE ??? board. [Upgraded] the processor on it from a 2.0GHz [to a] 2.7GHz Celeron processor (478 Pin 128KB Cache 400MHz. FSB 1.525V). The board is running the Phoenix Bios 3.24 that was with the 2.0GHz. It has an 845GL chipset. Every thing seems to be working alright. You can sure tell the difference."

I did find a Driver Backup Utility (below) and backed up all my HP drivers (I'm now in my HP installation with their drivers) and I wonder if they could be "restored" (and how to do it) into a straight WinXP installation? I don't know exactly what and how the WinDriversBackup backs up the drivers.
