Thanks Sven and David. I went in and told it to "Never dial a connection". After that it came up as an invalid link. I guess the system tried the cable modem and when it couldn't find the link, it wanted to try the telephone modem. It was a link I hadn't used for a couple of months, and I found the proper address with a search. Thanks again for the help. Bob

Hi Robert,
Go to Control Panel \ Internet Options \ Connections tab. Under "Dial-up and
Virtual Private Network settings" select your dial-up connection. Then for
"Choose Settings..." select "Never dial a connection". Click "OK" and close
Control Panel.

My Intel 845 desktop WXP Pro SP1 can connect to the internet two ways:
1. Normally via cat 5 cable to a Belkin wireless router and cable modem.
2. Can also use an external USR hardware modem connected to serial port.

I use the cable most of the time with no difficulty. Rarely, when cable
service is not available, I initiate dialup and use the telephone modem,
making no hardware or software changes to the system.

The problem is that after months of using the cable connection, when I try
to access a particular web site, it does not recognize my cable connection
and initiates the dialup process. If I cancel the dialup process, I cannot
access that site. I can access all (or most) other web sites using the
cable.

I don't know of a way to tell the system which hardware (cable or phone) to
use, and am reluctant to experiment for fear of "losing" the cable
connection capability.

Any and all comments and suggestions would be apprciated. Thanks
