Sister Soffie,
It was a pretty lengthy forward of an article on OMVG hydropower
project. If you have size limitation filter, that may have resulted in
the failure to receive it.
Momodou, history has it that environmental disasters often not
deliberate but the result of ill-conceived, not well thought-of
development projects. The idea of generating generating 400 GWh per yr
would tempt anyone tasked with managing institutions like NAWEC. And the
250,000 tons of carbon savings will entice any environmentally
challenged funding institution that all is going to be well for mother
earth.
Unfortunately experience elsewhere in West Africa (Ghana) says
otherwise. Hydropower, like rainfed agriculture is at the mercy of
climate patterns. Amount of power generated is determined by amount and
regularity of rains, which like good governance in the region, cannot be
guaranteed. With that uncertainty aside, how do we in the Gambia access
the agric land, the crops, the water and power generated 500km away?
More importantly I would want to know what we (Gambians) can do when the
horse we are trying to paint turn out to be a donkey?
