LET HAITI LIVE !
Melinda Miles, Co-Director of the Quixote Center
Thursday, March 11, 4:45 to 5:45
Red Gym, 716 Langdon St., Madison
On Wisconsin Room
(Enter main doors on Langdon St and go to the back, or north end)
Haiti has received daily media coverage as violent protests against the
government have forced President Aristide to leave the country against
his
will. What are the factors, internal and external, that are bent on
destroying HaitiĘs young democracy
even as the country celebrates two hundred years since its victory over
slavery?
Since 1999 Melinda Miles has coordinated the Haiti Reborn program of
the
Quixote Center. She has visited Haiti twenty times over the last six
years,
the last visit during the ouster of President Aristide only days ago!
She
will provide an eye witness account of the violence and upheaval of the
leading up to AristideĘs removal.
Considered an international expert on Haiti, Miles has spoken to a
wide-variety of college, university, church and political groups. She
has
given testimony to the U.S. Congress on Haiti's political and economic
situation. She also has extensive experience analyzing Haiti for the
print,
radio and television media, including: NPR, BBC World, Associated
Press,
Reuters, the New York Times, the Miami Herald and many other mainstream
press, as well as the Haitian press. She led a group of independent
international election observers during the 2000 elections. She now
leads
the Let Haiti Live campaign, a coalition that celebrated a major
victory in
July 2003, when the Inter-American Development Bank released
humanitarian
aid to Haiti despite a U.S. embargo. Perhaps most importantly, Miles
understands the complexity of Haiti, allowing her to effectively
articulate
the Haitian situation to a North American audience.
Come listen and participate!
