This might help, and certainly can't hurt...
(Written for an XP system, your selections may be slightly different.)
Boot into Safe Mode and go to Control Panel, System,
Hardware, Device Manager, click on the arrow to the left
on Mice and other pointing devices, see how many mice
the system thinks you have had, and delete them ALL.
When you reboot, the system will detect your mouse and re-install
the proper driver for it.
