Hi David...I installed a Western Digital 5.1 gig HDD on my machine and,
at first, I had the same problem as you.  It turned out that the version
of the bios on my machine would not support large hard disk drives.

My guess is that your bios won't support large hard drives either so
changing Windows 95 versions won't help.  What bios are you running on
your machine?  Mine was Phoenix Bios version 1.1.  I upgraded the bios
to version 4.1 and the hard disk (and most of the other stuff on my
computer) works fine now.
