The possible reasons are endless. Usually the biggest reason is that the phone line will not support a faster connection. Your system configuration is another reason, the modem is another, the software for the modem is another, and still the best and most likely reason is that the phone lines are old and not good, either in your house or between your house and the central office, or between the central office and the main switches, or all of the above. Get DSL or cable, and you'll wonder how you ever lived with a phone connection.
>i have a compaq presario 2100 when i connect to the intenet the modem only allows it to connect at 38.8 kbps i have he modem setting as high as it goes and i hve tried another phone line where another cpu connects at 46.6 kbps
