Alternative Media/Assistive Technology Coordinator
Center for Access-Ability Resources
NORTHERN ILLINIOS UNIVERSITY


Position:  The Alternative Media/Assistive Technology Coordinator,
Center for Access-Ability Resources (CAAR) is an integral member of a
staff responsible for the development and implementation of activities,
programs, policies, procedures, and services that support and insure the
academic and extra-curricular programs of students with disabilities
enrolled at the University.  The Coordinator will: 1) coordinate the
procurement, production, and distribution of alternative format
materials; 2) provide technical and instructional support related to
assistive hardware, software, peripherals and other technologies; 3)
trains students with disabilities to use adapted media and assistive
technology; 4) train and supervise student employees, graduate students,
and volunteers; 5) maintains the CAAR website; 6) provides guidance and
recommendations as it relates to access on Blackboard, On-Line, and
Distance Education Courses; 7) provides consultation and training to
other campus entities as it relates to students with disabilities and
assistive technology; and 8) other responsibilities as necessary.

Qualifications: 	Bachelor's Degree (Master's preferred) in
related field such as Computer Science, Instructional Technology,
Special Education, Rehabilitation, etc.   Computer Technical Skills
required, including demonstrated knowledge of/experience with Windows
operating systems, accessibility products, and basic software.
Experience with assistive technology and alternative media is preferred,
including software products such as JAWS, ZoomText, ABBYY FineReader,
Duxbury, etc. Experience with Braille and tactile graphics is helpful.
Experience in web development is required, with an understanding of
Section 508 compliance and W3C standards preferred. The successful
applicant should have excellent editing, advocacy, and organizational
skills. Experience in supervising and training others is required. Some
administrative/management experience, experience working in a college or
university setting, and knowledge of state and federal requirements
regarding students with disabilities are preferred.
