NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Feb 20 - Findings from a new study suggest that patients with a history of celiac disease are at increased risk for developing schizophrenia. Still, although the link is strong, celiac disease patients only account for a small percentage of schizophrenia cases.

The current findings agree with epidemiologic and genetic evidence that has shown an association between the two disorders, lead author Dr. William W. Eaton, from John Hopkins University in Baltimore, and colleagues note.

The new results, which are reported in the British Medical Journal for February 21, stem from a population based case-control study of people living in Denmark. The researchers reviewed national patient registries to compare the past medical history of nearly 8000 schizophrenics with that of almost 200,000 matched controls.
