When it comes to PAKIN and HUNTING, there is a lot to
write from my end, since I am told that my Grand
Father was the AGBA for the PAKIN society called "OLD
PA." "Old Pa" had likes of Alpha and Amadou, these two
gentleman came from Sierra Leone and stayed in the
Gambia until their death Alpha and Amadou were very
skilfull with beating these PAKIN drum-BATTA. Apart
from Old Pa, you had "Young Boys" this society as its
name indicates comprises of young gambians who tried
to Gambianised the Pakin Society.

With regard to HUNTING, their venue was Louvel Square,
In fact the First Hunting Society to be founded in the
Gambia was ODELEH by the late Pa William Daniels, a
Dispenser at RVH. Odeleh has its meeting place at No
12 Louvel Square. After the brief demise of this
society, you had other societies like DOGOMORO now
known as Ekun Baba Odeh founded by the likes of
Salieu John alias Ebuh John, Wole Cates and many
others. This society had its meeting place at 14
Louvel Square. Just imagine having 2 hunting societies
in the same street, there was always FEAR that their
members would fight each other.
In 1975, a new society was founded by the TWIN
brothers called Essau and Jacob, their society was
called OMOJESSA. It had its meeting place at Stanley
Street. This was the first time Hunting came to Banjul
North.

Following the death of Pa Daniels and Uncle MackIe
Njie in 1976 and 1977 respectively, a new society was
founded in Serrekunda. It was called IGIE OROKO, this
was history in the making, since Hunting was a Krio/
Oku Marabo thing and bringing it to the kombos meant
other ethnic groups took up the culture.

More to follow.
