If his machine is locking up, it could indeed need the scandisk and defrag,
but that might further mess things up if there is a virus involved. My
thought is that you should download Spybot and run that first to clear out
the mischief makers. Then the defrag will not be moving all that junk
around.
Spybot will catch more items than AdAware will in my experience. My
computer guru suggested Pest Patrol also. Pest Patrol is not free, but it
did catch items that both AdAware and Spybot missed, and I have had no
troubles since. I am now using just Pest Patrol.

after approximately 10,000 files were scanned. I am thinking of having
