I have no financial involvement with Talking signs, but they were
invented here at Smith-Kettlewell and blind folks have been
heavilly involved from the first.

We believe that in most cases they out perform smart card
technology in most ways.

and they are "off the shelf" technology now!

They do require a little specialized tuning when installed so as
to make sure each sign covers only the desired area.

smart cards, with their fairly limited range,  only tell what
you're passing, not what's at any distance. and they provide no
directional information at all.

talking Signs are private, you use them when you want too.  They
tell you what the "sign" says in recorded human speech. They give
you information about direction to the sign, and can be tuned so
as to allow you to pick out two side by side doors with different
signs from tens of feet away.
