The topic is dealt with a bit in the Nurture Hypothesis by Judith Rich
Harris. When the next kid comes along mum chucks the toddler out to the
playgroup where they are raised by the next oldest child in the family.
This older sibling is given close to full power to be as nice or as mean to
the youngster as they want. The kids are basically raised by their peer
group, which is Harris theory of child development generally. Ken
