Sometimes a manufacturers firmware upgrade will make a burner a little faster
or at least be able to burn on "certain certified disks" at the rated speeds of the
drive-AND-the-disks. Some drives are locked at slow speeds on disks it does
not have listed in an internal table. This is so it will always (hopefully) burn well,
even if much slower... (Better a slow burn than a failed burn...)
The only times I have read about a drive being "pushed" past the manufactured
ratings is when the people were using hacked firmware and a drive that was of
a very good quality and (was obviously) capable of the higher speed in the first place...
In other words, what you see (when new) is what you get...
In most cases, making a drive run faster than it was "sold as" voids the warranty
and all support is lost as the manufacturer washes their hands of it...
I only use manufacturer supplied firmware.
