The used monitor shouldn't have changed anything soundwise - the attached speakers are only speakers after all, and not responsible for sound generation.

Did you have sound before you added the 'new' monitor? Did W98 comment when you first booted up with the new monitor connected? Like 'Hey, a new monitor - where's the driver?' And did you then say. 'It's OK, it's a Plug and Play, have a look in C:\Windows\Inf'?

What sort of sound card have you got? Is it a PCI or an ISA? Or is it included in the motherboard circuitry? In that case you won't see a separate card.

  Subject: [PCBUILD] Sound not working

I have a Dell Pentium II with Windows 98se. I bought a used monitor which is a Packard Bell with the speakers on the side. I can't get any sound because there is no sound device listed. I think the Packard BEll is 16 bit and my system is 32 bit. Is there a way to configure my computer to work with the monitor?
