Hey Donald,
Depending on the type of modem/soundcard/chipset.............I have had
similar problems with Intel Chipset, Intel V.92(HAM) modems, cheap(CMedia)
soundcard......I solved my problem by hit and miss ......changing the PCI
slots in which they are installed.

Subject: [PCBUILD] system lockup
I have an approx. three and one half year old compaq desktop that came
with a 500 megahertz processor and a 13.5 gig hard drive. The hard drive
crashed and I had it replaced with a 20 gig used hard drive that had been
removed from another computer for upgrade purposes. Everything works until
I connect to the internet. Within about two minutes after connecting, the
whole system locks up. Someone told me it may be the modem. I replaced the
modem with a new one. It didn't help. I'm a novice but can follow explicit
instructions.
