Thank you for all of your responses. The majority of respondents endorse an
association between gluten intake and allergic conjunctivitis
symptomatology. Many complained of allergic conjunctivitis symptoms prior to
initiating a gluten free lifestyle; most noted improvement with gluten
avoidance. Finally, most found a strong association between inadvertent
gluten intake and an exacerbation of their allergic conjunctivitis.
One paper: ³Novel transglutaminase inhibitors reverse the inflammation of
allergic conjunctivitis²; Jan 2003; Am Soc Clinical Investigation: found
inflammatory conditions like celiac disease increase transglutaminase
levels; transglutaminase plays a role in the inflammation seen in the
allergic conjunctivitis; this may explain why we have allergic
conjunctivitis symptoms following gluten intake.
