Listmates: I asked for a recommendation for a substitute for butter that is
casein and soy free and does not have hydrogenated oils? Thank you very much
for your responses.
For Spreading:
Smart Balance has soybean oil, but no soy protein, they claim, and no dairy
or gluten or hydrogenated oils.
Fleishmann's Unsalted Margarine in sticks is casein free but contains soy.
Fleischmann's Light is gluten/casein/soy free. Comes in a tub. The sticks
have soy but the tubs do not. This is lousy for cooking but fine for
spreading. The right Fleischmann's Light comes in a plain gold wrapper, with a little
blue "Light" square on it. http://www.fleischmanns.com/products/light.jsp
Rice butter, and I like it very much. It comes in a small tube and you can
find it in natural foods stores.
Benecol but has hydrogenated oils. We are milk/casein/whey, soy, corn and GF,
and this has worked (b/c we are soy protein free, so hydrodgenated soybean
oil is okay).
Smart Squeeze liquid margarine. I am casein intolerant and get it in Shoprite
near the other margarines. It is tasty, you will like it. AND, it has no
tranfatty acids.
On potatoes etc, I use olive oil and garlic, which is just awfully good.
For Baking:
Palm Oil for shortening in recipes. The palm oil works great for
substituting for butter and margarine in recipes, also Olive oil and Safflower oil as
needed.
Spectrum. It's like Crisco but it's not hydrogenated. It's made from pure
palm oil. It's in a tub, needs no refrigeration and is sold at
Whole Foods stores.
Coconut oil. It's good for you too. You can get deodorized coconut oil from
Tropical Traditions that doesn't taste like coconut, or some really coconutty
nice stuff from Wilderness Family Naturals or Tropical Traditions.
Purity Farms Ghee (http://www.purityfarms.com/) From their website: "Purity
Farms Ghee (Clarified Butter) is made from Grade AA Sweet Creamery Certified
Organic** butter. Through a traditional Indian method, we cook the butter until
the water and milk solids are removed. The result is 'traditional' Ghee - a
rich, golden, semi-soft spread for the best in cooking, baking, or sautéing.
The taste - superb! Salt Free * Lactose and Casein Free * No Transfatty Acids *
Kosher * No GMO's (No Genetically Modified Organisms)
