I know Rachel asked that we not respond to this list: I'm hoping that
request meant to send software or information to the appropriate place.

I am responding here because this message points to a problem, a real
illegal situation is being assisted by those who hope to do "good".

It is necessary, under the Americans with Disabilities Act, for the EMPLOYER
to provide reasonable accommodations to disabled persons.  The disabled
person must request those accommodations by letting the employer know of the
situation requiring them --- disability, work expectations, etc.

I'm assuming this situation is happening within the U.S.
When I see

"A partially sighted employee needs this DOS software in order to read the
computer screen and keep his job."
it screams; "We passed a law against layoffs and firings because of
disability in 1990!"

Let's work toward enforcement of the law rather than enabling cheap or
greedy employers!
