Hi everyone and thanks for so many great suggestions.  I do think that the
problem is solved and that the tip which solved it (courtesy of Walt SMith)
was to turn off Task Pane (control-f1).  Still braced for a misfire, but
it's looking good at the moment.  Thanks again for such generosity with
info!
