I tried that and ended up having to restore my system and uninstall the
power toys.

Getting the logon screen to disappear is fairly simple to get rid of.  Why
it showed up is one of those computer mysteries.
There is a utility available from Microsoft.com called powertoys or rather
tweak UI.
Just do a search on the microsoft web page.  At any rate, this utility will
give you the power to bypass the Windows Logon screen among many other neat
things.
